I had a pleasant surprise when I perused the frozen yogurt options at the Yogurt Mountain near the office in Birmingham. The new fro yo franchise was gleaming green and purple but with a subtle holiday flair - pumpkin pie and apple pie flavors amidst 14 other scrumptious choices. Skeptical, I tested the bright orange speckled treat. How well could such an iconic Thanksgiving dessert translate into this creamy chilled form? One bite confirmed it, the speckles were real fall spices and the glowing color was undeniably pumpkin. And my lunch companion and coworker Maddie agreed, “My taste buds went nuts. As someone with Celiac disease, I can stock up on these gluten-free alternatives. Drizzle a little caramel and a few sprinkles of cinnamon on top of the apple pie, and I’ve got the perfect holiday treat.”
This 120 calorie treat comes so close to the real deal that I could top off my turkey feast with a 3.4 oz serving and feel satisfied. With a tart frozen yogurt base, this treat packs a nutrient rich punch that research links to helping cardiovascular health, maintaining a healthy weight and supporting stronger bones. I have yet to find a flour and butter based pastry with such claims.
Frozen yogurt of all flavors can be a healthful alternative to high calorie desserts on the market. Look for no sugar added varieties for the most benefits with minimum calories. Our Food Editor Shannon Sliter Satterwhite, M.S., R.D., says yogurt's "good" bacteria can strengthen your immune system and help digestion. The National Yogurt Association has certified nationwide chains Red Mango, Pinkberry and Berry Chill with at least 10 million Live and Active Cultures per gram (bacteria that transform milk into yogurt and bring great health benefits). No wonder this West Coast trend is journeying south and gaining popularity. Red Mango has spread through Texas and also boasts a seasonal Pumpkin Spice flavor with graham cracker topping (Pictured Above Right; photo courtesy of Red Mango). A small cup provides a burst of flavor and only about 100 calories from all natural ingredients. This is one fad with staying power anytime, but even better with estra holiday flair.
