Health Magazine's Frances A. Largeman-Roth, R.D., did a great segment this morning on The Today Show in which she showed viewers how to make healthier choices at the grocery store. I liked that she gave examples of foods that many people would think are automatically good choices but can be hiding extra calories and fat. (I always assumed banana chips were low-cal, but turns out they are often deep fried and loaded with calories.) She suggests trying dried apricots instead. Yum.

Among other suggestions -- try raspberries instead of grapes for added nutrients and flavored seltzer water instead of vvitamin water for fewer calories.

Question: What helps you make healthy choices at the grocery store? Going to the grocery store on a full stomach? Shopping in a certain section of the store? Maybe you check out nutritional info on your cell phone. What are your tips? We want to hear them! Please leave them in the "Comments" section below.

I personally reference books or magazines on nutrition from time to time to keep the right perspective. I have numerous in my home that I pick up periodically and read. It serves as a reminder to make healthier choices.

I try to never go to the store hungry. I think we definitely tend to purchase more and maybe even purchase less healthier foods when we are shopping hungry. Walking down the cookie or ice cream isles while hungry is not a good thing!
Shopping at health food stores tends to help me make better choices as well. A good health food store is typically stocked with less junk food and and a good health food store generally will promote healthier foods and food choices.

Oh it's definitely important to go to the grocery store on a full stomach. I never even walk down the snack food aisles. What helps me most is using baskets rather than a shopping cart. (But I'm only shopping for two).

Those are great suggestions - thanks for sharing. There is something to going to the grocery without being hungry. I also like the idea of shopping with a basket instead of a cart when possible -- less room for impulse buys!
