Tales From The Road

Burger2_4 I don’t eat a whole lot of red meat. I was a vegetarian for a while in high school – but I was one of “those” vegetarians who still ate seafood. I refused to give it up then and I think if I ever decide to go veggie again I will still eat shrimp and scallops and fresh fish. Nom nom.

Anyway, I do eat red meat, but – until recently at least – I limit my consumption. Not necessarily on purpose, I just tend to eat the meats that I crave, and I rarely crave red meat. But for some reason the past week has been bovine-za up in here.

I have had two burgers in the past week. Not just wimpy fast food burgers either, but those big ones you get at diner-type restaurants or places like Five Guys. Both of mine came from a restaurant here in Birmingham called Rojo, and both were equally delicious.

What do you think about the consumption of foods like burgers? I know they get a bad rap but I follow the moderation mantra; it’s not like I eat a burger everyday (or even every week, usually), and I feel like if my body is craving red meat, I’m going to give it what it wants. Maybe this is like jumping in the fast lane to gaining weight, but I don’t feel any fatter than I did before I ate the two burgers.

If your body is craving something, should you feed it what it wants or go for the fewer calories and order something like a salad? It seems to me that doing so will leave you feeling unfulfilled, unhappy, and – guess what – still craving that delicious burger.

I guess everything in moderation is the key. However, research shows there is a possible link between eating red meat and breast cancer. In fact see this link about red meat and adolescence...http://www.dana-farber.org/abo/news/press/2008/eating-red-meat-during-adolescence-might-heighten-risk-of-breast-cancer.htmlact
When I do eat red meat (only on rare occasions) I make sure it has no growth hormones or antibiotics added to it.
