These are my personal picks with explanations—no scientific study needed. So, when you and the kids check out the stash after Halloween trick-or-treating (you know, to divide them into piles of what you like, don't like, trade, etc...), these are the healthiest keepers! Got any others to add? Some Southern favorites that fit the "healthy" bill? E-mail us at healthyliving@southernliving.com and let us know!
- Three Musketeers—Because it’s not solid chocolate, and that nougat stuff is light and fluffy, there are fewer calories.
- Mini Kit Kat—Again, not solid chocolate, but wafers, which cuts calories.
- Tootsie Rolls—Chocolate flavored taffy-like substance that can’t have as many calories as a solid piece of chocolate.
- Hershey’s Kiss—If you can limit yourself to one or two, these are great for portion control.
- Peanut Butter Taffy—Those orange and black wax paper wrapped taffy circles. Why they're healthy? I'm pretty sure no one eats them.
- Junior Mints and York Peppermint Patties—Minty filling cuts down on calories from chocolate and fat.
- Snickers—This is a power candy. Even though it’s higher in calories, you get more satisfaction because of the nuts inside.
- Dum Dum Lollipop—If you only eat one, the calories are minimal.
- Dots—These chewy fruit-flavoried jellies are fat free.
- Raisinets—The raisin inside is healthier than a solid chocolate alternative.
