Since I’m in the mode of paring down, I decided to tackle my closet. I know Spring is normally the time for cleaning out and cleaning up. However, we’re seeing the beginnings of a real autumn here in Alabama, and I was inspired. As the air of autumn is fresh and clean, so shall my surroundings be.
A few years ago, I wrote a story about closet organization. The piece outlines some easy steps to eliminating clutter. For instance, separate everything into piles and go from there. Once you have everything sorted, giving away, repairing, storing, and so on are easy.
One thing I’ve found that really helps me when cleaning and organizing my closet is the type of hangers I use. I use mainly wooden hangers in my closet . Not only do they help your clothes retain their shape, but they also are thicker than the wire hangers, so you have to be more judicious about which items you keep because everything won’t fit. And, since the hangers are so nice, you don’t want to store mangy clothes on them. You find yourself only keeping the best of everything in order to make your entire closet space look nice, neat, and well-edited.
My mom caught on and started cleaning out her closet, too. She gave away seven or eight bags of clothing, etc. Afterwards, she said she felt so good, like a burden had been lifted. After carrying load upon load of stuff up and down the stairs of the house, I’m sure she felt good and physically tired, too! What great exercise.
Anyway, if Fall cleaning is a ritual in your home, I’d love to hear about it. In the meanwhile here are some other Closet Makeover Stories on SL:
